NBBS Literacy Program

The NBBS Literacy Program serves both Indonesian and English languages.

The NBBS motto is: Committed to Excellence. Reading is important for many reasons. On a personal level, life-long reading can be a wonderful and entertaining way for children to explore and learn about the world as it changes and as they change with it. An important part of the vision for NBBS is to help develop children as life-long learners and to instil a love for reading that will last their whole life.

On an academic level, research supports that children who are advanced readers tend to excel academically not only in language-based subjects, but in ALL subject areas, including math and sciences. We believe that literacy skills are best developed early and strong literacy skills will lead to excellence in many areas for children.

We begin by promoting a love for reading and the routine of reading on a daily basis.

NBBS has a long-standing Home Reading Program. NBBS encourages the children by giving them “library time” every day. During this time, teachers read stories and allow the children time to choose books to take home. Students are required to read every day in both languages, and record in the Reading Log the name of the book, time spent reading, and ask that parents sign the reading log. Children take home books in both languages every day.

Each class has a Reading Reward program which is fun and motivating for the students. If students read every day, complete the Reading Log, and have the log signed, they earn points for their class. Points help earn the class rewards along the way. Reading Rewards are mostly class-based.

English Reading: NBBS students are asked to try their best to read or look at English books every day. Starting in grade 4, all NBBS students are asked to read English novels (chapter books), which are imported from Canada. NBBS English chapter books are levelled to match all reading levels.
