Our Story
Background
With ever expanding globalization, Indonesia and the rest of the world are becoming closer and closer. The world is fast expanding and so is the need for our young people to be able to sort, process and apply logical, yet creative ways to deal with the their community, region, country and the world around them. Skill in second or even third languages will become more and more important. Learning aimed at the individual and applying critical thinking skills in both Indonesian and English will give children the best opportunities for their futures. From this belief grew the idea to open North Bali Bilingual School. With an aim for academic excellence, coupled with strong skills in language, critical thinking and character education, we aim to provide the best educational environment possible for children.
NBBS, follows the national curriculum of Indonesia, while implementing “best practices education”. NBBS is a private school, commonly refered to as a National Plus School, meaning the national curriculum is adhered to, while many “pluses” can be found. In NBBS, the implementation of the curriculum, in an acadenic sense, is rigorous, yet allows for differentiated instruction and project-based Learning. NBBS is a bilingual school, using both languages on a daily basis in many areas of the school, with some clases 100% in English.
As a full-day school, NBBS has much more daily and weekly instructional time than typical public schools, allowing for project-based learning, vibrant art and music programs, a sport program and co-curricular club activities. As a child-centred school, many programs and events reflect the positive energy and joy of our school. NBBS celebrates Children’s Book Week, Literacy Programs, Earth Day, Project Weeks, Gardening Programs, Spirit Days, and has a committed Community Service Program which is led by the NBBS Student Council who fund-raise and support various community and school programs.

The curriculum of North Bali Bilingual School (NBBS) is implemented in accordance with the mandate of the Republic of Indonesia. NBBS implements the basic education curriculum with a combination of the 2013 Curriculum, and the new National Curriculum of 2022. From 2022-2025, a gradual phasing in of the new curriculum, as mandated by the Department of Education, is in place at NBBS.
Adhering to our vision and mission, NBBS has developed a holistic, child-centred approach that is process-oriented, literacy-rich, and project-based. With strong character education and a family-type environemnt, NBBS, serving grades 1-6, has become a school where collaboration with familes is welcomed, and a place where students love to be!
a. Centered on the potential, progress, needs and interests of learners and their environment
The curriculum of NBBS is organized and developed based on the principle that learners have a central position to develop their abilities in order to become healthy, knowledgeable, capable, creative, independent, democratic and responsible citizens. To support the achievement of that goal the development of learner competencies are adjusted to the potential, progress, needs and interests of learners and the demands of the environment. Having a central position means that learning activities are centered on the learner.
b. Diverse and integrated
The curriculum of NBBS was developed by taking into account the diversity of characteristics of learners, the conditions of the surrounding communities of the school, appreciation of differences and does not discriminate against religion, ethnicity, culture, customs, socioeconomic status, nor gender. This curriculum includes the substance of the components of the required curriculum, local content, and self-development in an integrated manner, which are linked and arranged in a meaningful and appropriate way.
c. Responsive to developments in science, technology and art
The curriculum was developed based on the awareness that science, technology and art develop dynamically. Therefore, the spirit and content of the curriculum provides learning experiences for learners to follow and take advantage of developments in science, technology, and art.
d. Relevant to the needs of life.
Curriculum development is done by involving the community of NBBS to ensure the relevance of education to the needs of life, including social life, the business world and the world of work. Therefore, the development of personal skills, thinking skills, social skills, academic skills, and vocational skills is a necessity.
e. Holistic and Continuous Lifelong learning
The curriculum is directed to the development process, acculturation, and the empowerment of learners in a lifetime continuum. The curriculum reflects the links between the elements of formal education, nonformal, and informal with attention to environmental demands and conditions that will always improve the direction and the development of students.
f. Balance between national interests and regional interests
The curriculum was developed by considering national interests and regional interests to build the life of the society, nation and the state. National interests and regional interests should complement and empower the motto of Unity in Diversity.
NBBS Blended Learning System
The NBBS Blended Learning system was developed to ensure all students are able to access courses and programs in the event that government or Department of Education regulations require students to be out of school, for emergency reasons.
Blended learning is a combination of offline (face-to-face, traditional learning), a packet system, and/or online learning in a way that one compliments the other.
Depending on the situation, we may require a quick shift more towards online learning. NBBS can shift nimbly more to an online approach if and when we have to make that move! This is what makes blended learning a viable model for NBBS: the in-person and online components can be combined in the proportion required, with all variations providing the best possible education for our students.
